Welcome to AfriCamps at Doolhof in Wellington

We hope you will have a pleasant stay in our little piece of heaven on earth!

AfriCamps at Doolhof is nestled below the historic Bainskloof Pass, between the Groenberg and Limietberg Mountain ranges where the Kromme and Witte rivers meet.

The farm was named ‘Doolhof’ (Afrikaans for labyrinth) because of the many hills and valleys on the property. The first wine was made in 2005 and since then, Doolhof has become a sought-after award-winning wine producer with a strong focus on site-specific and exclusive wines from a unique terroir. Roughly 40 of the farm’s 380 hectares are planted to vine. Soils, growing conditions and microclimates vary considerably across this large expanse (which reaches up into Bain’s Kloof), and each grape varietal is faithfully wedded to its ideal terroir. Two white varietals, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, are grown, as well as a substantial number of reds. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, allowing for cooler days and less direct sunlight. The late sunrise and early sunset also allow for a longer ripening process, enhancing the elegance of the award-winning wines.

Activities on the estate include a vineyard hike and a river walk, mountain biking trails, and the gorgeous wine tasting room where you can try some of the estate’s award-winning wines along with delicious platters and lunches. Enjoy a bottle of Doolhof wine in your outdoor wood-fired hot tub or book a spa treatment from the comfort and privacy of your tent.

Our natural pets here at Doolhof provide the odd entertaining encounter. Do not be surprised if you come across Cape leopard tracks, baboons or duiker. The Piet-my-vrou bird will be your alarm clock in the mornings.

As the sun sets behind the Groenberg Mountains, the Doolhof valley is covered in long shadows and transforms into a tranquil amphitheatre with a glorious view of the Limietberg and Hawekwa mountains as they change colour.

Have a memorable stay with us!

Meet the Owners

Camp owners Johan Fourie and Angelo Casu both share a passion for the breathtaking property and hope that you will experience the essence of Doolhof they know and love. Angelo and Johan’s friendship and their shared passion for wine and mountain biking (being Cape Epic partners twice), culminated in what has become AfriCamps at Doolhof.

Johan has been involved with Doolhof Wine Estate since 2010 with an absolute belief in what this special piece of heaven-on-earth can offer. As a passionate cyclist and mountain biker, Johan could not ask for much more, being nestled amongst some of the most amazing mountain bike trails in South Africa. Add premium and unique wines and the picture is perfect!

Angelo has been involved with Doolhof since 2009. Angelo and his wife, Tina set up and manage Grand Dédale Country House, an exquisite and award-winning boutique hotel also located on Doolhof. Angelo’s hospitality experience spans over 30 years, not only in South Africa but also in the UK, France, Switzerland, the Caribbean, and his native Italy.
